Enmity between the Seed of the Woman aND THE seed of the Serpent

 Old Testament Prophecy

Genesis 3:15 And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.

Ø After man (Adam and Eve) sinned by eating from the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil, God determined that the seed of the woman, Jesus Christ, would bruise the head of the seed of the serpent and the serpent would bruise the heel of the seed of the woman, Jesus Christ.

New Testament Fulfillment

Matthew 1:18 Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost.

Ø Jesus is the seed of Adam and the woman (Eve) mentioned in Genesis 3:15.

1 Corinthians 15:55-58 O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory?  The sting of death is sin; and the strength of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord.

Ø The bruising of the heel of the seed of the woman is the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. Even though Jesus went through beatings, flogging, a crown of thorns place on His head and crucifixion itself, it only amounted to a bruising of the heel. The fact that Jesus Christ rose from the dead was a crushing blow to the head of the serpent from which he could not recover. Because Jesus rose from the dead, death no longer dominates mankind.

A Blessing for Mankind

Old Testament Prophecy

Genesis 22:18 18 And in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed; because thou hast obeyed my voice.

  • The seed of Abraham of which God is speaking is Jesus Christ. God made this statement to Abraham after Abraham was willing to sacrifice his soon at God’s command. God then commanded Abraham to sacrifice a ram instead. Because God was determined to save mankind from their sins, if Abraham would not have  found favor in God’s sight, man would have still been able to find salvation, it would have just been through the seed of another man besides Abraham.

New Testament Fulfillment

Matthew 1:20-21 20 But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost. 21 And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name Jesus: for he shall save his people from their sins.

  • All of the nations are blessed through the sacrifice made by Jesus. He allowed Himself to be crucified on the cross that mankind may have the opportunity to find salvation. The Bible tells us that blood must be shed in order for sins to be remitted.

2 Corinthians 5:14-15 14 For the love of Christ constraineth us; because we thus judge, that if one died for all, then were all dead: 15 And that he died for all, that they which live should not henceforth live unto themselves, but unto him which died for them, and rose again.

  • These verses let us know that Christ died for us and rose again.

Jesus, the anointed One

 Old Testament Prophecy

Isaiah 61:1-2 The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me; because the Lord hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound; 2 To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all that mourn;

  • Many times, the prophets would write in first person, speaking on behalf of the Lord. Here, in Isaiah’s prophetic words, he speaks on behalf of the savior, Jesus Christ, the Son of Man and the Son of David, letting Israel know the purpose of His coming. It is understandable that at the time of the writings that many may not have understood exactly what this meant, but Jesus clears it up on one of His many visits to the Synagogue.

New Testament Fulfillment

Luke 4:16-21 16 And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up: and, as his custom was, he went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and stood up for to read. 17 And there was delivered unto him the book of the prophet Esaias. And when he had opened the book, he found the place where it was written, 18 The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, 19 To preach the acceptable year of the Lord. 20 And he closed the book, and he gave it again to the minister, and sat down. And the eyes of all them that were in the synagogue were fastened on him. 21 And he began to say unto them, This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears.

  • In reading this scripture, Jesus lets those in the synagogue know who He is and the purpose of His coming. In this reading of scripture and statement, Jesus does not indicate that He has come to overthrow Rome so that the Jews may be in power.

The King rides on a donkey, this time

Old Testament Prophecy

Zechariah 9:9 9 Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion; shout, O daughter of Jerusalem: behold, thy King cometh unto thee: he is just, and having salvation; lowly, and riding upon an ass, and upon a colt the foal of an ass.

  • After Zechariah, writes a prophetic word of God’s judgement, he then describes the initial arrival of Israel’s king. Initially, He is not coming to make war, but He is coming in peace, signified by the riding of the donkey.

New Testament Fulfillment

Mark 11:7-11 7 And they brought the colt to Jesus, and cast their garments on him; and he sat upon him. 8 And many spread their garments in the way: and others cut down branches off the trees, and strawed them in the way. 9 And they that went before, and they that followed, cried, saying, Hosanna; Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord: 10 Blessed be the kingdom of our father David, that cometh in the name of the Lord: Hosanna in the highest. 11 And Jesus entered into Jerusalem, and into the temple: and when he had looked round about upon all things, and now the eventide was come, he went out unto Bethany with the twelve.

  • Entering Jerusalem in this posture, Jesus is letting the people know that He is King. He is also letting the know that He is coming in peace, signified by His riding on a donkey. The people however, shouting Hosanna, were looking for an earthly deliverer from Roman rule. Jesus will come in a posture of war during his second coming indicated in Revelation 19:11-13.
